We are in the process of organizing new IWA Pro Wrestling live events. We have only been in business for a short time and so far we have had great success. Our opening shows were a pre paid guarantee from one of Sydney's biggest venues - Homebush Olympic Stadium, the site for the 2000 Olympic games. We were given only 5 days notice to provide the venue with 90min shows for 16 nights in a row, April 3 -18. We used an American Pro Wrestler to headline the talent ( He won the IWA heavyweight belt at the Easter show). His name was Rasta Voodoo Man. Mark Mercedes had wrestled him in CWA - Germany and the IWA was able to book him on such short notice. With this booking confirmed we were able to secure another pre paid show. Following the 16 night debut we inked a deal for April 23 with the Central Coast Leagues Club just outside of Sydney. Rasta lost the belt and was flown home to Washington after the proceedings.
We were seen by over 1.2 million people during that month. At the same time, a history book called "100 years of Pro Wrestling in Australia" was released. The book details all the past greats and classic matches that have been promoted here. This book feature many photographs of WWF Hall of Famers such as Pat Patterson, Gorilla Monsoon, Killer Kowalski, Tony Garea & Fred Blassie they are all documented in this book (in fact I still have an issue of Sydney TV Times magazine from 1967 with Pat Patterson and Kowalski on the front cover). Since the '100 years' book came out and our debut Easter Showdown happened we have been approached by many interested parties both on a business level and from the fans in this country. There is a lot of enthusiasm about Pro Wrestling in Australia at the moment.
The IWA then secured some more pre paid shows, firstly a small venue, 300 seater, small budget, at Bankstown, Sydney, on July 5th. Then we will be performing again in August and every following month the IWA will be on in Bankstown. These smaller shows will provide budgets that will not include provisions for the airfares and accommodation for overseas talent but it will provide a platform for the local lads and ladies to gain credible and regular working experience.
However we are still in the process of negotiating a series of shows in a larger venue that would provide a budget for International names. We have spoken already with some US talent , both King Kong Bundy and Greg Valentine are interested and available for a tour next January. We are also looking at getting some Japanese talent for these shows.
We are currently mapping out a 3 year working plan that includes a new and improved Wrestling magazine being marketed, published and distributed in NSW, this would also cover in more depth the International Scene, particularly America and Japan. Camera's have been following the IWA and a TV pilot episode is being edited together from our first shows. In addition a 3 hour video showing the best of the Easter Showdown is ready and should be available along with the new IWA T shirts at the Bankstown ' Lethal Introduction' on July 5. We are currently securing more merchandise from overseas and should soon have a range of Action figures and T shirts ( Yes, including nWo & Austin 3:16 T- shirts ). I have a regular weekly report at "scoops wrestling web site" in New York. The scoops page is one of the industries best sources of Wrestling info and gets over 1 million hits from wrestling fans worldwide each day. Also the Sydney Telegraph Mirror has agreed to publish reports on the IWA and our local wrestlers.
We plan to get serious about promoting Pro Wrestling and bring it back up to the proud state that it was during the 60's and 70's. We would be honored if the WWF or WCW want to come to Australia. We would love to do some cross promotional work with any of the huge companies from the USA or Japan. We have sent out detailed Profile's & Photo's of our guys. For example 3 of our local workers went to Florida and were trained by the Malenko's. Another kid just got back from the Hart's school in Calgary. We have got that guy called "7ft Thunder" he's very tall, very muscular, and he goes over with the fans. We also have a host of past greats who are available and still live here, such as Mario Milano, whom we inducted into our hall of fame during April.
The IWA is getting serios about promotin the sport on these shores and will be coming to your local suburb soon.
