Most people come to Thailand and head straight for the beaches and teh expensive resorts, those who 'treck' out a little further tend to go to tourist traps, I mean destinations.

An easy way to tell if you are seeing the tourist version of Thailand is to look around, if you see whaite faces, even 1 then you are in a tourist trap. If all you can see are Thais then congratulations you are in the real Thailand now go live it up, and don't worry about the language barier, a few whiskeys will take care of that and even in the most remote locations someone will speak passable English (usually)
