Filmy? Yes very filmy. In fact very Hindi.
WTF are you on about Conan?
I just watched a film masterpiece, from India, and I would strongly suggest anyone thinking that the Indian film industry is all singing, dancing with outdated concepts think again.
Or better yet go watch Black ....
As usual for a Hindi film, yes it is in Hindi language so make sure you get a subtitled version. Well actually it is 1/2 Hindi and 1/2 English, so as usual for a Hindi film it is 3 hours long - but I must say the entire 3 hours are used telling the story. There is no filler here.
It is rare for me to be able to sit and watch even an 80 minute film right through these days because I see the structure, I see the plotlines and the probably character growth and lose interest - mainly watching the clock for the properly timed events.
Not so in this case, beside interruptions like a rather nasty child trying to steal and kill a stray kitten I have been taking care of, but that's another story to do with his racist and alcohol damaged father. Whom we hopefully won't hear anymore about.
But rather than me go into the story too much you can read reviews here and a small steal from IMDB:
The cathartic tale of a deaf, mute and blind girl, and her teacher who brings a ray of light into her world of BLACK.
Sounds exciting doesn't it? It's not action, but it is a very good story, very well played by Bollywood icon Amitabh Bachchan and it won 28 International awards.
To further top off the total awesomeness of the film look at these choice quotes from the Black Wikipedia article :
- both Bachchan and Mukherjee studied sign language and Braille for seven months.
- Time magazine selected it as one of the best films of 2005 (#5 actually)
- listed at number one on the Indiatimes' list of 25 Must See Bollywood Movies
Overall it is an emotional tale, steeped in good values and good morals - something I particularly admire in Hindi films.
